Museum Schokland

UNESCO site showcasing Schokland’s island history

9.2/10
#1 of 2 in Schokland

Museum Schokland offers a fascinating journey through the history and geology of the former island of Schokland, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Flevoland. Located in Middelbuurt, the museum is set among a cluster of historic wooden buildings surrounding a small church, evoking the atmosphere of the old Zuiderzee community that once thrived here.

Inside, visitors discover exhibits that trace Schokland’s dramatic transformation—from a peninsula to an island, and finally to reclaimed land—highlighting the Dutch struggle against water. The museum’s collection includes rocks, fossils, and large glacial erratics from the Ice Age, as well as archaeological finds and artifacts that bring to life the daily routines of Schokland’s former inhabitants. Outdoor displays and walking routes guide you across the ancient dwelling mounds (terps) and through the landscape that bears the marks of centuries of adaptation and resilience.

Museum Schokland is open from 11:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday (daily in July and August). Admission is €9.50 for adults, €6.00 for children aged 6–11, and free for children under 6. Family tickets are available for €25.00. The museum is both educational and atmospheric, making it a rewarding stop for history buffs, families, and anyone interested in the unique story of the Dutch battle with the sea. The historic church on site also hosts weddings, adding to the site’s enduring sense of community and tradition.
