Eindhoven

Eindhoven is often called the City of Light, a name that recalls its origins as the home of Philips, and it has reinvented itself from a small industrial town into a leading centre for technology, design and innovation in Europe. The change began in the late 19th century, when Philips was founded in 1891 to make light bulbs, bringing electricity, industry and prosperity to the area. The truck maker DAF was founded here in 1928, and the Eindhoven University of Technology and the high-tech Brainport region, with ASML in nearby Veldhoven, continue the tradition. Today the industrial legacy is visible in the museums, the creative districts and the entrepreneurial energy of the streets.

The Philips Museum, in the company’s original factory, tells the story of Eindhoven’s rise as a global technology hub and shows the inventions that shaped modern life. The DAF Museum is a must for car and truck enthusiasts, with a collection of trucks, cars and prototypes from the Dutch manufacturer. Strijp-S, a former Philips industrial complex, has been transformed into a creative district of design studios, galleries, stylish cafes and event spaces. It is the centre of Dutch Design Week, one of the largest design festivals in the world, which draws thousands of visitors every October, and it hosts events throughout the year.

The city centre mixes modern architecture, shopping streets and busy squares. The Down Town Gourmet Market offers a global menu, while the Kleine Berg and the Wilhelminaplein are popular for cafes, bars and nightlife. The neo-Gothic St. Catherine’s Church is one of the few historic landmarks in a city that was heavily bombed in 1944. Getting to Eindhoven is easy. The international airport has direct flights to major European cities, and the city is well connected by train to Amsterdam, Utrecht and other Dutch destinations. Public transport within Eindhoven is efficient, and the compact centre is best explored on foot or by bike, with rentals widely available.

The best time to visit Eindhoven is from mid-May to September, when the weather is warm and the festivals, outdoor terraces and green spaces are at their best. Summer brings long days and a lively atmosphere, while spring and autumn offer pleasant conditions for the city and the surrounding countryside. Autumn is the best time for design lovers.
