Kasteel Eijsden stands in the town of Eijsden, in the far south of Limburg, where the Meuse flows out of Belgium into the Netherlands and the borders of the two countries meet close to Maastricht. It is a moated castle set in a park, and it belongs to the tradition of country houses built along the river by noble families of the region. The setting, in a corner of the country where the Dutch landscape starts to become hilly and the architecture shows Belgian and French influences, gives the castle a character that differs from the castles of the north.
The castle is mostly a private residence and is not open to the public in the way of a museum. The interior can be visited only by groups by appointment, while the bailey, the outer courtyard, and the gardens are open free of charge. That arrangement allows visitors to see the castle's exterior, the moat and the layout of the grounds without paying or booking, and to imagine life in a country house of the nobility. The park is well kept, with lawns, old trees and water.
The history of the castle is bound up with the region. The area around Eijsden was contested for centuries between the Dukes of Brabant, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and later the Dutch Republic, and many castles were built to guard the roads and the river. The nobility who held them played a role in local politics and had close links with families on both sides of the present border. The castle has been altered over the centuries, and its present appearance reflects a mixture of periods.
Eijsden itself offers other sights. The Sint-Martinuskerk is the town's church, and the water mill called De Hoop, along a stream, is a pleasing piece of heritage. The river Meuse is a magnet for walkers and cyclists, with paths along the banks and the Maasplassen lakes nearby, and the city of Maastricht is only a few kilometres to the north, with its churches, museums and squares. Belgium is also within walking distance, with the Voer region and the town of Visé across the border.
The castle suits visitors who like quiet heritage, walks and cycling in the Meuse valley. Check the arrangements for group tours if you want to see the interior, and combine a visit to the bailey and the gardens with a ride along the river and a stop in the town.
