Valkenburg Castle
Only hilltop castle ruins in the Netherlands
Valkenburg Castle, perched on a hill above the town of Valkenburg aan de Geul, is the only hilltop castle in the Netherlands and a fascinating destination for history lovers and curious travelers alike. Dating back to the 11th century, the castle has witnessed centuries of sieges, power struggles, and dramatic events, including its final destruction in 1672 by the forces of Stadtholder Willem III. Today, visitors can wander through the evocative ruins, exploring remnants of medieval walls, towers, and foundations while enjoying sweeping views over the Geul Valley and the picturesque town below.
The castle is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, with last entry at 4:45 pm. Tickets are available at the entrance, and payment is by PIN. The site is also home to the Velvet Cave (Fluweelengrot), an extensive marlstone cave network beneath the ruins. The cave features wall murals, sculptures, and a romantic chapel dating from the French period, and hosts a popular underground Christmas market each winter. Guided tours of the cave resume after the holiday season.
After exploring, visitors can relax at the rooftop bar and restaurant โTash,โ which offers snacks and drinks with panoramic views of the castle and town. Valkenburg Castle is a unique blend of history, legend, and scenic beauty, making it a highlight of any visit to South Limburg.
