Bonnefanten Museum

The Bonnefanten Museum is the main art museum of Maastricht and one of the best-known museums in the south of the Netherlands. It stands on the bank of the Maas in the Ceramique district, a modern quarter built on the site of a former ceramics factory, and its building is as famous as its collections. Designed by the Italian architect Aldo Rossi and opened in the 1990s, the museum has a striking silhouette: a long, zinc-clad wing, and a tall domed tower that is visible across the river and has become an emblem of the city.

Rossi, who won the Pritzker Prize in 1990, was known for architecture that used simple geometric forms and drew on the memory of cities and buildings. At the Bonnefanten, the dome is shaped like a rocket or a lighthouse, and it contains a viewing space with windows toward the city. The long wing has galleries on several floors, connected by a grand staircase. Whether you love the building or find it odd, it is certainly memorable.

The collections cover a wide range. The old masters section is strongest in early Italian painting and in art from the southern Netherlands and Flanders, including religious works and portraits. The contemporary collection includes conceptual art, minimal art and works by artists linked to the region. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, often with an international focus, and these change several times a year, so the visit can be different each time.

The name has a local flavour. Bonnefanten is a Maastricht form of the French phrase bons enfants, meaning good children, and it was the name of a former convent that housed the early collection. The museum tells a story of a city with deep Burgundian and French influences.

After your visit, Maastricht has much more to offer. The Basilica of Our Lady, the Treasures of Saint Servatius and the old city centre are close by, while Fort Sint Pieter and the caves beneath the hill offer a different type of exploration. The bridges, including the Wilhelminabrug and the Sint Servaasbrug, make for pleasant walks across the river.
