Basilica of Our Lady
Romanesque basilica with 15th-century Mary statue
The Basilica of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek) in Maastricht is a magnificent Romanesque church that stands as one of the city’s most cherished landmarks. Located on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein in the heart of the historic Stokstraat Quarter, the basilica is surrounded by elegant boutiques, restaurants, and centuries-old buildings, making it an essential stop for visitors exploring Maastricht’s old town.
The basilica’s origins trace back to the 5th century, possibly making it the oldest Christian church site in the Netherlands. Built atop the remains of a Roman temple, the current structure is a stunning example of Romanesque architecture, with its thick stone walls, rounded arches, and fortress-like westwork. Two large stones from the ancient Roman fort are still visible at the base of the church.
Inside, the atmosphere is serene and awe-inspiring, with dim lighting, soaring columns, and a rich treasury of religious art and relics. The highlight for many is the “Sterre der Zee” (Star of the Sea), a 15th-century statue of Mary that draws pilgrims and visitors alike. The gentle glow of candles lit by the faithful adds to the sense of devotion and tranquility.
The basilica is open daily from 08:30 to 17:00, and admission is typically free, though donations are welcome. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or spiritual reflection, the Basilica of Our Lady offers a memorable and moving experience in the heart of Maastricht.
