Eijsden

Eijsden lies in the far south of the Netherlands, in the province of Limburg, where the Maas crosses the Belgian border and enters the Dutch landscape. Maastricht is only a few kilometres to the north, and the Belgian town of Visé lies directly across the border to the south. The place has Roman roots, but it prospered in the Middle Ages as a river port and trading post on the Maas, and its position on the border encouraged a blend of Dutch and Belgian influences that can still be heard in the local dialect and tasted in the food. Since 2011 the village has been the administrative centre of Eijsden-Margraten, a municipality that also includes Margraten, home to the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial.

The best-known landmark is Kasteel Eijsden, or Castle Eijsden, a moated château dating to the 17th century, built of brick with towers and set within formal gardens and parkland. It is among the finest castles in Limburg’s countryside, and the long approach and the water around it make an excellent subject for photographs. The castle is privately owned and not open to visitors, though the surrounding park is freely accessible. From the village, the surroundings can also be enjoyed on a walk along the nearby lanes.

The riverside is the other highlight. A promenade along the Maas offers views across the water and a gentle walk, and it is a popular starting point for cycling tours along the river and for boat trips. The Maas valley here is broad and green, with barges passing and anglers along the banks, and routes lead both north toward Maastricht and south into Belgium.

The historic centre of Eijsden is small, with narrow streets lined with traditional houses, cafes and local shops. Eijsden’s seasonal markets and village festivals fill the calendar, and food is a point of local pride. Limburgse vlaai, a fruit tart with a soft crust, is sold in local bakeries, and regional beers and cheeses are served in cafes and restaurants. Burgundian touches in the cooking reflect the closeness of Belgium and southern Europe.

Outdoor pursuits are close at hand. Eijsden is a gateway to the hills and orchards of South Limburg, with well-marked cycling and walking routes through meadows, woodland and along the river. The Eijsder Beemden nature reserve, on the floodplain of the Maas, is known for wildflowers, birds and grazing cattle, and offers quiet walking when the river is low. The nearby Sint-Pietersberg area, with its marl caves and limestone hills, can be reached by bike.

Eijsden works well for cross-border excursions. Maastricht is a short ride away by bike or train, with its old town, squares and fortifications, and Visé on the Belgian side offers a different set of streets, cafes and a riverside setting. Liège can be reached by train for a longer day trip, and the Margraten cemetery is another meaningful stop for those interested in the Second World War.

Getting there is easy. The railway station has direct connections to Maastricht and Liège, and the road network links the village to the rest of Limburg. The village is compact and easy to explore on foot or by bike, and bike rentals can be found locally. Places to stay include guesthouses and riverside hotels.

Late June to early September brings the warmest weather, with gardens in bloom and the best conditions for walks, boat trips and cycling along the river. Spring is notable for blossom in the orchards, and early autumn brings fruit and quieter paths. Winter is calm and often misty on the river.

Whether the draw is history, nature or the relaxed pace of Limburg life, Eijsden is a good example of a Dutch-Belgian border village.
