Vlissingen

Vlissingen, often called the Gateway to the Sea, is a city where maritime tradition and modern leisure meet on the southwest coast of the Netherlands. Its history goes back to the Middle Ages, when its position at the mouth of the Westerschelde made it an important port for trade, fishing and naval operations. Over the centuries Vlissingen saw battles and sieges, and it has a legacy of fortifications, historic buildings and a proud seafaring spirit. It is on the island of Walcheren, close to Middelburg and Veere. The city was heavily bombed in 1940 and again in 1944, when Allied forces landed here in the Battle of the Scheldt, and the war is part of its story.

The best-known feature is the long seaside boulevard, one of the longest in the Netherlands. Visitors can walk along the promenade, sit at cafes and watch big cargo ships and cruise liners pass only a short distance from the shore. The boulevard has large hotels, restaurants and terraces, with wide views of the North Sea and the busy shipping lane. The sandy beaches are a major attraction, safe for swimming and sunbathing and good for water sports, from windsurfing to beach volleyball. They are well kept and family-friendly, with playgrounds, beach clubs and seasonal events.

Maritime heritage is at the centre of Vlissingen’s identity. The Zeeland Maritime Museum, the Maritiem Muzeeum Zeeland, has interactive exhibits on the naval history of the city, on shipbuilding and on the local hero Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, whose statue stands on the boulevard. Visitors can also tour the historic naval ship Mercuur, explore the De Kazematten bunkers or see the Windorgel, the Wind Organ, a sound sculpture played by the sea breeze. The old harbour, with its traditional fishing boats and modern yachts, is a pleasant place for a stroll or a meal of fish.

Vlissingen’s cultural scene is lively and varied. CineCity Vlissingen hosts film festivals and concerts, while theatres, galleries and music venues offer entertainment through the year. Museum Panorama Walcheren shows the island and its history in a different way. The town centre combines historic architecture with modern shops, and weekly markets, boutiques and local bakeries add to the charm. Family attractions include the Reptile Zoo Iguana, indoor playgrounds such as Ballorig and Streetjump, and nearby amusement parks, as well as the Sun Train Zeeland, a solar-powered tourist train.

Nature lovers will like the closeness of the dunes, nature reserves and cycling routes that crisscross Walcheren. The Westduinpark and the Nollebos are green areas on the western edge of the city. Pleasant bike rides and walks lead to nearby towns such as Middelburg and Veere, or along the coast to quiet beaches and birdwatching spots. Boat trips and cruises on the Westerschelde give a different view of the city and its maritime setting.

Getting to Vlissingen is easy. The city can be reached by train, as the end of the line from Middelburg and the rest of the country, and by car via the A58 motorway. Ferries and water taxis connect Vlissingen with Breskens and other places in Zeeland. Once there, the flat land and marked paths make it easy to explore on foot or by bike, with rentals available locally.

The best time to visit Vlissingen is from late June to early September, when the weather is warm and the beaches, boulevard and outdoor events are at their liveliest. Summer brings long days, festivals and busy terraces, while spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Winters are quieter but atmospheric, with fresh sea air, cosy cafes and lights along the promenade.
