Maritiem Muzeeum Zeeland
Maritime history and underwater treasures in Vlissingen
Maritiem Muzeeum Zeeland, located in the heart of Vlissingen’s marina, offers visitors an engaging journey through the maritime history of Zeeland. Housed in a complex of buildings that span from the 16th to the 21st century—including the historic 17th-century Lampsins townhouse—the museum blends centuries-old heritage with modern interactive exhibits. Following a major renovation and reopening in 2023, the museum now features a free audio tour, animated videos, and hands-on maritime games designed to appeal to all ages.
A highlight of the museum is its focus on Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated naval heroes, who was born in Vlissingen. Exhibits explore his life and the region’s role in Dutch naval history, while displays of underwater treasures recovered from sunken ships bring the adventurous spirit of Zeeland’s seafaring past to life. Visitors also learn about the turbulent history of Vlissingen and the broader maritime culture of the province.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, and on Mondays during Dutch school holidays. It has earned the “Kidsproof” label and is recognized as one of Zeeland’s top family attractions. While specific admission fees are not provided, the museum’s central location and wide range of activities make it a must-visit for anyone interested in the sea, history, or the unique story of Zeeland.
