Iguana Reptile Zoo

Reptielenzoo Iguana is a small indoor zoo in Vlissingen, on the coast of Zeeland, and as the name suggests it is devoted to reptiles and amphibians. It is a compact attraction in the town near the seafront and the beach, with bars and restaurants close by, which makes it a convenient choice for a family on a day when the weather turns bad. Visitors can see a range of species at close quarters, from lizards, snakes and turtles to the iguanas that give the place its name.

The appeal of a reptile zoo is partly the unfamiliar. Many of the animals are shown in glass terrariums set up to resemble their natural homes, with heat lamps, plants, rocks and water, and a good display lets you study details that are hard to see in the wild, such as the scales of a snake, the eyes of a chameleon or the claws of a tortoise. Reptiles are cold-blooded, so they depend on warmth from their surroundings, which is why the zoo is kept warm inside, and visitors should dress in layers. Educational displays explain how the animals live, what they eat and how they are kept, and keepers or staff can often answer questions.

Families with children usually enjoy the experience, and it is a good way to introduce young visitors to animals that are often misunderstood. Some species are venomous, but they are kept safely behind glass. Most visitors come in the early afternoon, so going at a quieter time, in the morning or later in the day, makes it easier to see the animals and read the signs. Parking in front of the building is limited in time, so using a nearby public car park or arriving on foot is easier if you plan a longer visit.

Vlissingen has plenty of other things to see. It is a port town on the Westerschelde, the estuary that leads to Antwerp, and the birthplace of Michiel de Ruyter, the seventeenth-century admiral, who is commemorated with a statue on the boulevard. The Maritiem Muzeeum Zeeland tells the story of the region's seafaring, the Windorgel is a musical sculpture on the seafront played by the wind, and the Sun Train Zeeland is another local attraction. The beach and the boulevard are pleasant for a walk, and ferries cross the estuary to Breskens.

The zoo suits families with children, animal lovers and anyone curious about reptiles. Allow an hour or so, and check the opening days and prices before you go.
