Veere

Veere lies on the north coast of the island of Walcheren, on the shore of the Veerse Meer, in the province of Zeeland. It was founded in the 13th century and flourished as a trading port, above all in the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was the staple port for Scottish wool and merchants from Scotland lived and traded here. Its prosperity is still visible in the grand merchant houses, the ornate town hall and the huge Grote Kerk, which dominates the skyline of Zeeland’s north coast. The compact centre is a pleasure to explore on foot, with winding lanes, quiet courtyards and a lively market square lined with cafes and boutiques.

The harbour is the core of the town, with pleasure boats and historic ships moored in the water and terraces where visitors can eat fresh seafood on sunny days. The marina gives access to the Veerse Meer, a large lake created in 1961 when the Veerse Gat was dammed, and now popular for sailing, kayaking and swimming. The waterfront promenade offers wide views across the water and is good for a leisurely stroll or a sunset picnic. The Campveerse Tower, a defensive tower guarding the harbour, is one of the town’s most photographed landmarks, and the Stenen Beer, a stone jetty, is a remnant of the old harbour defences.

Cultural attractions are many. The Scottish Houses museum, in two merchant houses on the waterfront, tells the story of the town’s trading links with Scotland, with period rooms, art and historical objects. The 15th-century town hall, with its elaborate façade and carillon, reflects Veere’s former wealth and civic pride. The Grote Kerk, once a church and now a venue for concerts and exhibitions, is worth visiting for its architecture and views from the tower, and for a sense of how large the town once aimed to be. Brasserie de Peperboom and other cafes offer a stop between sights.

The surroundings offer plenty of outdoor options. Cycling and walking routes cross the Zeeland countryside, past windmills, dikes and flower fields. The nearby Vrouwenpolder Beach is a favourite for sunbathing, swimming and kite surfing, and nature reserves such as Oranjezon give quiet places for birdwatching and walking among the dunes.

The town hosts regular markets, art fairs and festivals, especially in summer, when Veere comes alive with music, food and cultural events. Local shops sell Zeeland specialities, including cheeses, sweets and handicrafts, which makes it easy to take a piece of Veere home.

Getting to Veere is straightforward by car, with good road connections from Middelburg, Vlissingen and the rest of Zeeland. Parking is available on the edge of the town, with a short walk or bike ride into the historic centre. Regional buses from nearby towns offer public transport. Accommodations range from boutique hotels and guesthouses to holiday parks and campsites.

The best time to visit Veere is from late June to early September, when the weather is mild and the waterfront, markets and outdoor attractions are at their liveliest. Spring and early autumn also offer pleasant conditions, with fewer crowds and good light for photography.
