Goes

Goes sits on the island of Zuid-Beveland in the southwest of the Netherlands, in a province defined by water, dikes and the tides of the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde. The town’s early development dates back to around the 10th century, and it grew as a market town for the farms, orchards and polders around it, helped by a harbour linked to the sea through a navigable channel. That agricultural role has never entirely disappeared. Zuid-Beveland is known for fruit, especially apples, pears and cherries, as well as for onions and potatoes, and Goes remains the place where the farmers and growers of the island do their business and shopping.

The old centre is centred on the Grote Markt, a broad square lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. Rising above it is the Maria Magdalenakerk, known as the Grote Kerk, a large late-Gothic church whose unusually tall brick tower is a navigational mark across the flat countryside. The name Grote Kerk is simply Dutch for Great Church, and inside, the high vaulted spaces show how wealthy the town once was. Side streets lead to quieter corners with small canals, bridges, historic façades and independent shops, and the weekly market, held on the town’s squares, is a good moment to see local produce and regional specialities such as Zeeuwse bolus, a sticky sweet bun, and mussels in season.

The Stadshaven, the city harbour, lies just off the centre. Moored traditional boats, former warehouses and terraces give it a maritime flavour, and it is a pleasant place to sit with a drink and watch boats come and go. From here the town opens up toward the water, and boat trips and sailing are easy to arrange in the surrounding Zeeland waters.

Families will appreciate the Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele, a heritage steam railway that carries passengers on a slow, nostalgic journey out of Goes and across the island through orchards, fields and small villages, with carriages and locomotives run by volunteers. Berkenhof Tropical Zoo has exotic animals in a garden setting, and De Hollandsche Hoeve offers a petting zoo, playgrounds and picnic areas for younger children. In poor weather the pool and sports halls at Omnium provide an active alternative.

For a rainy day, Zeelandhallen is the town’s event and exhibition complex and hosts trade fairs, concerts, markets and sports competitions throughout the year, so it is worth checking the programme before a visit. Seasonal festivals, art exhibitions and open-air performances in the centre add to the calendar, and the cafes spill out onto the squares as soon as the weather allows.

The surrounding countryside is made for cycling. Flat, well-marked routes follow orchards, polder roads and dikes toward the Oosterschelde and the Veerse Meer, a calm saltwater lake popular for sailing, kayaking and windsurfing, and the Zeeland coast with its beaches and nature reserves is within easy reach.

Getting to Goes is convenient. The railway runs through the town on the line between Roosendaal and Vlissingen, with trains toward Middelburg and, with a change, toward Rotterdam and the rest of the country, and the A58 motorway passes the town. Compact and flat, the centre is best explored on foot or by bike, and there is parking near the centre.

May is when the season starts, and mid-May to mid-September is the most comfortable period, with mild weather, outdoor terraces and the busiest event calendar. Spring brings blossom to the orchards, and early autumn is quieter, with good light for photography. Winter is calm and cold, but the market and shops carry on.

Whether the interest is history, shopping or the relaxed pace of Zeeland life, Goes is an easy and rewarding stop. One easy way to get your bearings is to look for the tower of the Maria Magdalenakerk, which is visible from most approaches.
