Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele

The Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele is a heritage railway on the Zeeland island of Zuid-Beveland, run by enthusiasts who keep steam locomotives and old carriages in service. It follows part of the original railway line through the island, which was built in the nineteenth century as part of the route connecting the mainland with Zeeland's ports. Today the stretch between Goes and Borsele is operated as a tourist attraction, and trains run on selected days, mainly in the warmer months.

The journey starts at the old station in Goes, the main town of the island. Passengers board vintage carriages, hear the whistle, smell the coal smoke and settle into wooden seats while the locomotive pulls out of the town. The route crosses a flat landscape of orchards, arable fields and polders, passing villages such as Kwadendamme and Hoedekenskerke. In spring the fruit trees are in blossom, which makes the ride especially beautiful, while summer brings fields of crops and long views under big Zeeland skies.

The railway is mostly maintained by volunteers who restore locomotives, repair track and run the trains, and many of them are happy to talk about the machines. Goes offers plenty to do before or after the ride. The Maria Magdalenakerk, a large Gothic church, stands on the market square, the Stadshaven is a pleasant harbour for a stroll, and the Tuesday market brings the town to life. There is also a swimming pool and leisure complex in town for a different kind of break. The Oosterschelde coast and the storm surge barrier lie a short distance away and are well worth including in a day in Zeeland.

A trip on the train is relaxed rather than thrilling, and it suits visitors who like slow travel, photography and nostalgia. Book ahead if you can, particularly on event days and school holidays, and bring a layer in case of coastal wind. Riding the train is a leisurely way to see part of the Netherlands that most visitors miss, and a good example of Dutch railway heritage.
