Maria Magdalenakerk

The Maria Magdalenakerk, commonly called the Grote Kerk, is the principal church of Goes, the main town on the Zeeland island of Zuid-Beveland. It dominates the market square and is the visual anchor of the town. Despite the saint's name it is not a Catholic church today; as in most of the Netherlands, the medieval parish church passed to the Protestant community after the Reformation and is now used by the Dutch Reformed tradition.

The church is a large Gothic building, started in the late Middle Ages, when Goes was a prosperous trading town. Its scale is a good indication of the wealth the town enjoyed at that time, thanks to the surrounding farmland and the shipping routes through the Zeeland waters. The building suffered badly in a fire in the early seventeenth century and was reconstructed in a simpler form, so the exterior shows the layers of different periods rather than a single, unified style.

The interior is typical of Dutch Protestant churches, spacious and bright, with a focus on the pulpit and the organ rather than on side altars and statuary. Visitors can look for the surviving medieval structure, the woodwork and any stained glass, though details change with restorations. The church is used for concerts and community events, and the acoustics make it a favoured venue for music. Opening arrangements vary, so check locally before arriving, since the interior is not always open outside organised hours.

Goes itself is a pleasant small town with a lively Tuesday market, a canal harbour known as the Stadshaven, and narrow streets lined with shops and cafes. The Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele, a heritage steam railway, runs in the summer months and gives a nostalgic ride across the Zuid-Beveland countryside. The surrounding area is orchards, polders and dikes, and the Oosterschelde coast with its storm surge barrier is easy to reach by bike or car.

The church suits visitors interested in medieval architecture, Dutch church history and quiet reflection. Climb the tower if it is open to the public, as the view over the town and the flat Zeeland landscape is rewarding, and combine the visit with a stroll through the market square and the harbour.
