Zoutelande

Zoutelande lies on the southwest coast of Walcheren, in Zeeland, facing the North Sea, and has long attracted Dutch and international visitors looking for sun, sea and sand. The village’s history reaches back to medieval times, but it was in the 20th century that Zoutelande became a favoured holiday destination, and Zoutelande’s beach has been the main reason to come ever since. Its beach, which faces southwest, receives more hours of sunshine than many other Dutch beaches, and the village is sometimes called Zeeland’s Riviera. Much of the Netherlands suffered in the war, and Walcheren was flooded in 1944 when the Allies breached the dike at nearby Westkapelle, and the dunes, dikes and defences along this stretch of coast are an important part of the area’s modern story.

The main attraction is the broad sandy beach, regularly ranked among the cleanest and most family-friendly in the country. The high dunes behind the beach offer views over the North Sea and are crossed by walking and cycling trails. A promenade lined with beach pavilions, shops and restaurants serves fresh seafood and Zeeland specialities, and lifeguards, showers and playgrounds make the beach suitable for families. Water sports such as kite surfing, windsurfing and paddleboarding are popular with active visitors, and the Duintop, a high point in the dunes, offers some of the best views along the coast. The Water Playground de Meerpaal adds a place for children to splash on warm days.

History buffs will appreciate the Bunkermuseum Zoutelande, housed in a restored bunker in the dunes. The museum gives insight into the region’s experience of World War II and the role of the Atlantic Wall, the line of German coastal defences built along the North Sea. Art lovers can visit Kunst aan de Kust, a local gallery that shows work by regional artists. The village church, the Catharinakerk, and the Zoutelandse Molen windmill add to the cultural charm.

Outdoor activities are plentiful in and around Zoutelande. The dunes and polders are ideal for cycling, with well-marked routes connecting the village with Domburg, Westkapelle and Vlissingen. The Kustmarathon and other sports events draw athletes and spectators. The countryside nearby offers birdwatching, horse riding and a chance to explore Zeeland’s distinctive landscape of dikes, creeks and polders.

The events calendar includes summer festivals, beach parties and food fairs, which create a lively atmosphere in the peak season. The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, and accommodations range from beachfront hotels and holiday parks to guesthouses and campsites. Outside July and August the village is much quieter, and the long beach can be nearly empty.

Getting to Zoutelande is simplest by car, with good road connections from Middelburg, Vlissingen and the rest of Zeeland. Parking is available near the beach and village centre. Regional buses from nearby towns and train stations offer a public transport option.

The best time to visit Zoutelande is from June to September, when the weather is warm, the beach is at its best and the village’s outdoor events and activities are in full swing. Spring and early autumn also offer pleasant conditions, with fewer crowds and good light for photography.
