Stadshaven Goes

The Stadshaven is the town harbour of Goes, a small and attractive town on the Zuid-Beveland peninsula in Zeeland. Goes was once a port of some importance, reached by a waterway from the Oosterschelde, and the harbour is the remains of that maritime past. Today it is mainly a place for pleasure boats and a pleasant public space, but the quays, the water and the buildings around it still give a sense of when ships came right up to the edge of town.

The atmosphere is relaxed. Small yachts and leisure boats lie in the berths once used by trading vessels, and some historic ships are sometimes moored there. The quays are lined with houses and old warehouses, whose facades are reflected in the calm water, and cafes and restaurants with outdoor terraces look out over the harbour. It is an easy place to sit with a coffee or a meal and watch the activity on the water, particularly on a sunny afternoon, and it is popular in summer with both locals and visitors.

The harbour is also a starting point for the rest of Goes. The old centre is compact and pleasant to walk, with narrow streets, small shops, a market square and the Maria Magdalenakerk, a large Gothic church whose tall tower is the main landmark of the town. The weekly market is well known in the region, and the town is a good base for exploring Zuid-Beveland, a landscape of orchards, polders and dikes. Events and markets are sometimes held around the harbour, adding to the lively feel.

Transport connections are good. Goes has a railway station, and the Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele, a steam train, runs on a heritage line from the town on selected days, which is a charming outing for families and railway enthusiasts. The Omnium sport and recreation complex, with its pool, is another option for a rainy day, and the Zeeland coast and the Oosterschelde National Park are within easy reach by bike or car.

The Stadshaven suits couples, families and anyone looking for a quiet stop in a historic Zeeland town. Allow an hour for a stroll and a drink, and combine it with the church and the market for a half-day. Evening is a good time to visit, when the light softens over the water and the terraces fill.
