Rhenen

Rhenen sits on the slopes of the Grebbeberg in the central Netherlands, on the north bank of the Nederrijn, the Dutch stretch of the Rhine River. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, and its strategic position on the river made it a key defensive site for centuries. The Grebbeberg, a prominent wooded hill rising above the river, has long been a landmark. It was the site of the Battle of the Grebbeberg in May 1940, in which Dutch troops tried to hold the line against the German invasion at the start of World War II. Today the hill holds war memorials, the Grebbeberg War Cemetery and walking trails with sweeping views over the Rhine valley and the countryside beyond.

The compact city centre has historic streets, shops and restaurants, and is dominated by the Sint Cunerakerk, the Cunera Church, a late Gothic building dedicated to Saint Cunera and known for its tall tower. The tower can be climbed on certain days, and its carillon sounds across the town. The city’s riverside promenade and parks provide quiet spots for relaxing, picnicking and enjoying the scenery, and the former fortifications give the lower town a pleasantly green edge.

One of Rhenen’s main attractions is Ouwehands Zoo, a family-friendly zoo with a wide range of animals, themed habitats and interactive exhibits. The zoo is especially known for its giant pandas, its tropical rainforest hall and its adventure playgrounds, and it is a favourite with families.

Rhenen’s location on the edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park makes it a gateway to the outdoors. The hills, forests and riverbanks are crisscrossed with hiking and cycling routes, and the Kwintelooijen nature reserve is a quiet stretch of heath and woodland with viewpoints. The Grebbe Line, a historic defensive waterline built to protect the centre of the country, adds a military dimension, and parts can be followed on foot or by bike. Cultural life in Rhenen includes regular markets, festivals and community events, including concerts, art exhibitions and seasonal celebrations. Getting to Rhenen is straightforward by train, with connections to Utrecht and other major Dutch cities, though the exact service pattern is worth checking in advance. The city is also easy to reach by car, with parking near the centre and at the foot of the Grebbeberg. Bike rentals are available for exploring the city and the surrounding countryside.

The best time to visit Rhenen is from mid-July to mid-August, when the weather is warm and the outdoor attractions, zoo and hiking trails are at their best. Spring and early autumn also offer pleasant conditions, with wildflowers and fewer crowds, and the hills show strong colour in autumn. In winter the viewpoints on the Grebbeberg are open and often misty, and the zoo remains open with its indoor halls, which makes the area workable all year. A day here pairs naturally with a walk up the hill and a look at the cemetery.
