Harlingen

Harlingen lies on the Wadden Sea coast of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands, and is a city where maritime history and everyday life mix easily. Sailing, mudflat walking, known as wadlopen, and birdwatching are popular, and the nearby Afsluitdijk and the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offer scenic drives, cycling and nature excursions.

The events calendar includes maritime festivals, markets and cultural celebrations. Harlingen has hosted the Tall Ships Races, when historic sailing ships fill the harbour, and local events such as the Fishery Days celebrate the fishing tradition. The friendly atmosphere makes visitors feel at home, whether they are taking a harbour tour or strolling along the quays.

Getting to Harlingen is straightforward, with direct trains from Leeuwarden and good road links to the rest of Friesland and the Netherlands. There is ample parking near the harbour, and bike rentals are widely available for exploring the city and surrounding countryside. Accommodation ranges from boutique hotels and harbour-view apartments to historic inns and unusual stays in converted lighthouses.

The best time to visit Harlingen is from late June to early September, when the weather is mild, the harbour is busy and outdoor activities and festivals are in full swing. Spring and early autumn also offer pleasant conditions, with fewer crowds and beautiful light for photography.
