Ameland, known in West Frisian as It Amelân, is a municipality and island in the province of Friesland, Netherlands. It is one of the West Frisian Islands, situated in the Wadden Sea. The island has a total area of 268.50 km², of which 59.11 km² is land and 209.39 km² is water. The resident population is approximately 3,822. The island's history is deeply rooted in its maritime location. Historically, Ameland was prone to flooding and shifting sands, leading to the construction of dikes and the gradual reclamation of land. Getting to Ameland is via ferry from Holwerd on the mainland to Nes. The ferry operates year-round, with increased frequency during the summer months. For those driving, there are parking facilities in the villages. The best time to visit Ameland is during the spring and summer months, from May to September, when the weather is mild and the beaches are active. Spring offers blooming flowers and migratory birds, while summer provides long days for beach activities. Autumn can be windy but offers beautiful colors and fewer crowds.
