Nes Harbor

Nes is the main village of Ameland, one of the Dutch Wadden Islands, and its harbour is where most visitors first set foot on the island. The ferry from Holwerd, on the Frisian mainland coast, crosses the Wadden Sea and docks here, and the quay is the hub of activity when boats arrive and depart. The harbour sets the tone for the island: relaxed, outdoorsy and closely tied to the sea and its tides.

The journey over the Wadden Sea is part of the experience. The crossing takes around forty-five minutes, and on the way passengers see mudflats, gulls, seals on the sandbanks and the low profile of the island rising ahead. The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a vast tidal area where the sea twice a day ebbs and floods, exposing the sea bed. The village of Nes has narrow streets of low houses, some of them old captains' houses, and is a fine place to stroll.

Other places on the island can be reached from here by bicycle, which is the main way to travel. The old village of Hollum, with its lighthouse, is at the western end, and its beach is one of the best on the island. A museum in the old church tower, a library and a village centre add to the sights, and the Wadlopen Center organises guided walks across the sea bed at low tide, a unique experience that must always be done with a qualified guide.
