Paleis Het Loo
17th-century Dutch palace with baroque gardens
Paleis Het Loo, located just outside Apeldoorn, is one of the Netherlandsโ most significant royal landmarks. Built in the late 17th century for King William III and Queen Mary II, the palace is a striking example of Dutch Baroque architecture, with its symmetrical design and elegant interiors reflecting the grandeur of the House of Orange-Nassau. Visitors can explore original rooms restored to their historical appearance, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Dutch royalty over the past three centuries.
The palace is surrounded by meticulously maintained baroque gardens, considered among the most beautiful in Europe. These formal gardens, with their geometric patterns, fountains, and sculptures, are a highlight for many guests. The estate also includes a junior palace, extensive parklands, stables, and carriage houses, providing a comprehensive experience of royal life.
Recently, Paleis Het Loo underwent a five-year refurbishment, adding 5,000 square meters of modern underground museum space while preserving its historic character. The palace hosts exhibitions on Dutch history and culture, making it an engaging destination for visitors of all ages. Dining options on site range from the formal Restaurant de Balzaal to the more casual Prince Henry George.
Paleis Het Loo is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM, with admission fees for adults and children, and family passes available. The palace remains a must-visit for those interested in Dutch heritage, architecture, and gardens.
