Best of Dwingelderveld
One-day exploration of Northwest Europe's largest wet heathland
View Itinerary βTwo days exploring Drenthe's heathlands and quiet forests
Arrive in Dwingeloo, settle in, and begin exploring the vast heathlands of Dwingelderveld National Park starting from the main visitor center.
Visit Boslounge Visitor Center
Start your trip at the Boslounge Visitor Center. Get oriented with the park maps, learn about the local ecology (heath sheep, birds), and check current trail conditions. This is the primary trailhead for many walks.
Morning Walk: Heath and Forest Loop
Embark on a self-guided walk through the flat heathlands and quiet forests. The terrain is easy, suitable for low fitness levels. Enjoy the silence and moody skies typical of Drenthe. Watch for heather blooms if in season.
Picnic Lunch in Nature
Enjoy a packed lunch at one of the designated picnic spots near the visitor center or along the trail. Bring your own supplies to save costs and enjoy the serene environment.
Afternoon Fen Exploration
Continue your walk towards the wetland fens. The ground may be boggy, so wear appropriate footwear. This area offers different flora and birdwatching opportunities compared to the dry heath.
Browse Kringloop de Siepel
Visit this local secondhand shop in Dwingeloo village. Itβs a great place to find unique treasures, vintage Dutch items, or practical gear for the rest of your trip. A charming cultural stop.
Check-in and Relax
Return to your accommodation (camping or nature campsite). Relax, unpack, and prepare for the next day. If camping, set up your tent or park your camper.
Where to stay: Book a spot at one of the nature campsites within or near Dwingelderveld well in advance, as they fill up quickly. Alternatively, look for B&Bs in Dwingeloo or Ruinen.
Getting around: A car is recommended to reach the visitor center and village. Parking is paid at the Boslounge Visitor Center.
A second day of gentle exploration, focusing on longer walks or cycling through the park before departing.
Breakfast
Enjoy a hearty breakfast at your accommodation. If camping, prepare simple meals. If staying in a B&B, enjoy local Dutch breakfast items.
Extended Walk: The Long Loop
Take a longer, more immersive walk into the deeper parts of the park. Since Dwingelderveld is Northwest Europe's largest contiguous wet heathland, you can walk for hours without hearing roads. This is a low-drama, meditative experience.
Lunch in Dwingeloo
Head back to Dwingeloo village for lunch. Try a local cafe for Dutch snacks like stroopwafels or a simple sandwich.
Final Browse or Souvenir Shopping
If you missed anything on Day 1, revisit Kringloop de Siepel or explore the village streets. Itβs a quiet, authentic Dutch village experience.
Pack and Prepare for Departure
Return to accommodation to pack up. Ensure you leave the site clean. If camping, take down your tent carefully.
Where to stay: Check out by noon. If extending stay, book for another night in Drenthe.
Getting around: Ensure you have paid for any remaining parking fees before leaving the park area.
