Winsum

Winsum lies just north of the city of Groningen, in the northern Netherlands, in the open clay landscape that stretches toward the Wadden Sea. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when it developed as a trading and agricultural settlement along the Winsumerdiep, a canal that gave local farmers a route to the sea. Over the centuries Winsum grew into a thriving community, merging with neighbouring hamlets and keeping its character through the careful conservation of its historic buildings and waterways. Like many villages in the area, it is built partly on terpen, artificial mounds raised in the early Middle Ages as protection from floods. Since 2019 it has been part of the municipality of Het Hogeland.

The core of the village is its canal, lined with traditional Dutch houses, arched bridges and two windmills, De Ster and De Vriendschap. The windmills are open to visitors on select days, offering insight into the region’s milling history and views over the village and countryside. The centre is a pleasure to explore on foot, with cobbled lanes, cafes and small shops selling local products and crafts.

Cultural attractions include the Kinderboekenhuis, a children’s book museum and library in a historic building, which is a good stop for families and for anyone who remembers a favourite Dutch picture book. The area is also known for artisanal cheese farms, where visitors can learn about cheese-making and sample regional specialities. The village churches, such as the 13th-century St. Vitus Church, are architectural highlights and often host concerts and community events.

Outdoor pursuits are the main reason to stay longer. Winsum is a hub for cycling and walking, with well-marked routes through the Groningen countryside, along dikes and to neighbouring villages. The Pieterpad, the Netherlands’ best-known long-distance walking trail, runs through Winsum; its first stage from Pieterburen ends here, so the village is a familiar stop for walkers. The nearby Marenland recreation area offers boating, fishing and picnics by the water.

Winsum’s community spirit is reflected in its markets, festivals and events, which celebrate local traditions, food and music. The village’s closeness to the city of Groningen gives additional options for museums, shopping and evening entertainment, while the wider region offers scenic drives and day trips to the Wadden Sea coast and Lauwersmeer National Park, a wetland of marsh, reed beds and birdlife.

Getting to Winsum is straightforward by train or car. The village has a railway station with regular services to Groningen, and parking is available in the village. The compact centre is best explored on foot or by bike, with rentals available locally. Accommodations range from bed-and-breakfasts to rural holiday cottages and campsites.

The best time to visit Winsum is from early July to early September, when the weather is mild and the canal, windmills and outdoor attractions are at their best. Spring and early autumn also offer pleasant conditions, with blossom and fewer crowds. Autumn and winter bring large flocks of migrating geese, and the village is calm and atmospheric.
