Middelstum

Middelstum lies in the northern countryside of Groningen, in the clay landscape between the city of Groningen and the Wadden Sea coast. Its origins go back to the early Middle Ages, when communities in this low-lying land built terpen, artificial mounds of earth, to protect themselves from flooding. Middelstum’s terp can still be recognised today as the elevated core of the village, and standing on it gives a different perspective on the surrounding fields and waterways. Since 2019 the village has been part of the municipality of Het Hogeland.

The village’s most prominent landmark is the Sint-Hippolytuskerk, a medieval church with origins in the 13th century, whose brickwork, nave and ornate interior make it worth a visit for anyone interested in architecture and history.
