The Hippolytuskerk is the village church of Middelstum, a small place in the Groningen clay country, and it is one of the finer late Gothic churches of the province. It is dedicated to Saint Hippolytus, and it is built of brick in the form of a cross, with a nave, transepts and choir, a plan that is less common in the region's village churches than the simple single-nave type. The building went up mostly in the fifteenth century, and it contains older fragments, including some Romanesque details, which show that an earlier church stood here.
The tower is the main landmark from outside. It rises above the flat fields and can be seen from a distance across the open land, as is the case with most Groningen churches, which were built on low mounds and designed to be seen. The tower is topped by a dome of a later date, from the seventeenth century, which gives the skyline a slightly unexpected silhouette. The main entrance on the north side is of about 1500 and gives a sense of the ambition of the builders.
The interior is the church's special treasure. The vaults and walls carry paintings of the sixteenth century, which illustrate scenes from the story of salvation and fill the upper parts of the building with colour. Many medieval churches in Groningen once had such decoration, but most of it was whitewashed after the Reformation, and where it survives or has been uncovered, it is a rare glimpse of how bright these interiors once were. A sacrament niche of yellow Bentheimer sandstone, a type of stone brought from across the German border, is another fine detail.
Access needs planning. According to current information, the church is closed for renovation until the autumn of 2026, so visitors should check that it has reopened before making a special trip, and it is also a church in use, which means that it is open only at certain times. The exterior can be seen at any time.
Middelstum lies in the Hogeland and Middag-Humsterland area, a landscape of terps, farms and medieval churches that is excellent for cycling. The roads are flat and quiet, and the villages nearby each have a church of their own, so the church makes a natural stop on a day's ride. The city of Groningen is about half an hour away by bicycle or car.
The church suits architecture lovers, those interested in medieval art and cyclists exploring the Groningen countryside. Allow half an hour, and combine it with other village churches.
