Stevensweert

Stevensweert lies in the province of Limburg, in the south of the Netherlands, on the western bank of the Maas River, in the municipality of Maasgouw. It is among the smallest of the Dutch fortress villages. It was founded in the early 13th century, and its position on the Maas made it a focus of military and trading activity along the river. In the 17th century the Spanish built star-shaped fortifications around the village, and much of the system survives today. The ramparts, bastions and moats give Stevensweert its distinctive layout and offer a glimpse of the region’s turbulent past, when the Maas valley was a frontier between rival powers.

One of Stevensweert’s most recognisable landmarks is De Hompesche Molen, a restored windmill on the edge of the village. The Maasplassen themselves are popular for water sports, boating, fishing and birdwatching, with marinas and beaches nearby.

The best time to visit Stevensweert is from May to September, when the weather is mild, the countryside is green and outdoor activities are at their best. Spring and summer bring blooming gardens, events and busy terraces, while autumn offers colourful foliage and a quieter atmosphere. Winters are generally cold and damp, but the cosy cafes and festive lights give the village a warm feel.
