Stevensweert is a small fortified town on the river Maas in the Dutch province of Limburg, and its whole centre counts as a monument. The town was laid out in the early seventeenth century as a fortress, during the Eighty Years' War, when the Spanish built a ring of defences on the Maas to control river traffic and the border territory around it. It was designed on the principles of the star fort, with a regular pattern of streets inside and a ring of bastions and moats outside. This planned origin is why the layout looks so different from the winding medieval streets of most Dutch towns.

The fortifications are the principal monument. Earth ramparts, bastions and sections of moat still trace the star-shaped outline, and walking along the line of the old defences gives a feeling for the scale and logic of the design. Because the town was a military settlement, its streets run in a neat grid around a central square. Over the centuries the fortress changed hands more than once, passing through Spanish, Dutch, French and Austrian control, and sieges and bombardments left their mark.

Within the ramparts stand the buildings of a small community. The church dominates the central square, surrounded by houses of various periods, some of them with characteristic regional brickwork and shutters. Other features include a historic mill, known as the Hompesche Mill, and a village pump, which are reminders of everyday life. Plaques and information boards explain the history of the place, and guided walks are offered at times.

The setting is part of the appeal. The Maas flows nearby, and the Maasplassen, a chain of lakes formed from former gravel pits, offers boating, swimming and walking. Cycle routes along the river and through the surrounding countryside link Stevensweert with Roermond, Maasbracht and other villages, and the combination of history and water makes it a good place for a relaxed day out.

The town suits history lovers, cyclists and people who like quiet places. A walk around the ramparts takes about an hour, and the centre itself is compact. Check for guided tour dates if you want a deeper explanation, and note that the area can be busy at weekends in summer. Combine it with a stop at a cafe on the square or a boat trip on the lakes.
