Hattem

Hattem lies on the western bank of the IJssel River, at the gateway to the Veluwe, across the water from the larger city of Zwolle. It received city rights in the late 13th century and prospered as a member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful trading network that brought prosperity and architectural splendour to the towns along the river. The medieval layout is still visible in the narrow streets, the old city gate, the Dijkpoort, and the picturesque squares, which give the town an inviting atmosphere for exploration on foot.

One of Hattem’s main draws is its trio of distinctive museums. The Anton Pieck Museum pays tribute to the famous Dutch illustrator whose whimsical drawings inspired the look of the Efteling theme park, and visitors can see original artworks, sketches and displays that bring Pieck’s fairy-tale world to life. The Voerman Museum shows the work of the Voerman family of painters, who lived and worked in Hattem and recorded the landscapes and daily life of the region. Hattem’s compact centre is a pleasure to explore on foot or by bike. Historic churches, merchant houses and terraces line the streets, and cafes serve local specialities. The octagonal windmill Molen De Fortuin, on the Molenbelt, is a landmark of the town’s old milling trade that can be seen from the edge of town. The riverside and the dike provide opportunities for walking, cycling and picnicking, and the town’s parks and playgrounds make it a popular destination for families. Seasonal events such as art fairs, markets and open-air concerts add to Hattem’s community spirit.

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate Hattem’s position on the edge of the Veluwe, one of the Netherlands’ largest nature areas. Well-marked cycling and hiking routes connect the town with forests and heathland to the south, and with the neighbouring Hanseatic cities of Zwolle and Kampen along the river. The IJssel offers boating, fishing and birdwatching, with open views across the flood plains and passing ships.

Getting to Hattem is straightforward, with good road connections from Zwolle, Apeldoorn and the wider Gelderland region. Zwolle, which has a major railway station, is a short bike ride away across the IJssel, and regional buses provide additional public transport. Parking is available on the edge of the historic centre, which keeps the old streets quiet.

The best time to visit Hattem is from late June to early September, when the weather is mild and the museums, terraces and riverside walks are at their best. Spring and autumn also bring pleasant conditions, with blossom or colourful foliage adding to the town’s charm, and the winter streets are peaceful. In any season the town rewards a slow loop: through the old gate, past the merchant houses, along the dike and back by a museum, with a stop at a cafe between each.
