Dutch Bakery Museum The Warm Land

Hattem is a small, old town on the IJssel river in Gelderland, close to Zwolle, with a medieval layout of narrow streets, remains of town walls and a history as a member of the Hanseatic network. It has a handful of museums that suit its size. The Dutch Bakery Museum, known as Het Warme Land, is the one dedicated to bread and baking, and it occupies old farmhouse buildings on Kerkhofstraat in the centre of town. The warm land of the name refers to the warmth of the oven and the baker's trade.

The museum tells the story of how bread reached the Dutch table. It begins with the grain grown by farmers, follows it to the miller who ground it, and ends with the baker who turned the flour into loaves and pastries. The close cooperation between the three was a basis of village and town life for centuries, and the collection shows tools, ovens, moulds, weights, sacks and signs that belonged to the trade. A traditional wood-fired oven gives a sense of what baking involved before gas and electricity, and displays about mills and milling show how the flour was made.

The buildings are part of the interest. The old farmhouses and stable have been adapted as galleries, and in places the interiors show how a household lived, with a nineteenth-century parlour and tiled panels. The museum has a strong hands-on side for children, including workshops where visitors can make biscuits, activities for school groups and sometimes performances by costumed bakers. A shop sells baking products and souvenirs, so it is easy to leave with something tasty.

Hattem has other places worth adding to the day. The Anton Pieck Museum honours the illustrator and painter who lived in the town and whose nostalgic scenes of old Dutch life are well loved. The windmill De Fortuin overlooks the town, and the old gates and ramparts offer pleasant walks. The IJssel dykes and floodplains are good for cycling, and Zwolle is a few minutes away by train.

The museum suits families, food lovers and anyone interested in everyday history. It is best visited with at least an hour to spare, more if you join a workshop.
