Watersports (kitesurfing)

Texel is the largest and most southerly of the Dutch Wadden Islands, reached by a short ferry crossing from Den Helder, and it is a favourite with people who like to be outdoors. Its long west coast faces the open North Sea, with wide beaches and dunes, and its east side borders the shallow Wadden Sea with its tidal flats. This double coastline gives wind and water sports a lot of room, and the island has become one of the best-known places in the country for kitesurfing, windsurfing and similar activities.

Kitesurfing means riding a small board while pulled over the water by a large controllable kite. It demands steady wind, open space and a good understanding of safety, and it can be learned in a few lessons with a qualified instructor. The Dutch coast is well suited. Winds are frequent, beaches are wide and the sea is shallow enough in places to offer room to practise, so the sport has many followers. On Texel, one spot above the others is known to kitesurfers by its beach post number, Paal 9, near the village of Den Hoorn on the west coast. It is regarded as one of the best places on the island for launching, with a long beach and varied conditions that suit different levels of ability.

The season for kitesurfing runs roughly from spring to autumn, and the best wind is often found at the shoulders of the season, in May and September, though conditions vary. The coastal waters give both flat and choppy water and small to medium waves, and riders use them for freestyle and wave riding. Tides influence the experience, as the amount of beach and the strength of currents change through the day, so it is wise to check tide tables and weather forecasts. Safety rules, such as keeping clear of swimmers and bathers, are enforced, and beach zones may be restricted, so local regulations should be followed.

Facilities near the beach include places to eat and drink, and kite schools offer lessons and equipment hire. The island also has other water sports, including windsurfing, catamaran sailing and surf kayaking, and spectators can enjoy watching colourful kites over the dunes. Away from the water, Texel offers a national park of dunes and woods, the Ecomare seal centre, sheep, a lighthouse and plenty of cycling routes.

The activity suits adventurous visitors, families with teenagers and anyone who enjoys watching. Allow a half day for a lesson. Book in advance in summer, and bring warm clothing.
