
Ecomare, located near De Koog on the island of Texel, is a marine rescue and education center that offers visitors a close look at the wildlife of the North Sea and Wadden Sea. Open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Ecomare is a popular destination for families, nature lovers, and anyone interested in the coastal environment of the Netherlands.
The center is best known for its seal sanctuary, where young or injured seals are cared for before being released back into the wild. Visitors can watch daily seal presentations at 11:00, 14:30, and 15:30, providing an opportunity to learn about the animals’ rehabilitation and the challenges they face in their natural habitat. The Sea Aquarium features a variety of local marine species, with feeding presentations on weekdays and Saturdays at 14:30.
Ecomare also houses engaging exhibitions such as the “Wonderful Wadden Sea” and the “Whale Hall,” which displays impressive whale skeletons and highlights the region’s marine biodiversity. A dune park surrounds the center, allowing for short nature walks and birdwatching.
Admission is €16.00 for adults, €11.00 for children aged 4–18, and free for children under 4. The site is wheelchair accessible and offers a museum shop and café. Ecomare provides a hands-on, educational experience that connects visitors with the unique coastal life of Texel and the wider Wadden region.
