Observation towers for birdwatching and stargazing
Observation towers in Lauwersmeer National Park offer visitors a unique way to experience the sweeping landscapes and rich wildlife of this former sea inlet turned nature reserve. Scattered throughout the park, these towers provide elevated viewpoints ideal for bird-watching, wildlife spotting, and, after dark, stargazing in one of the Netherlands’ few official Dark Sky Parks.
Among the most notable towers is De Baak Middelplaat, a favorite for observing marsh harriers, snipes, and bearded reedlings as they move through the reeds and wetlands. Near the Ballastplaatbos, another tower offers a chance to spot the impressive white-tailed eagle, a highlight for bird enthusiasts. The recently constructed tower at Diepsterbos not only gives panoramic views over the reserve but also features educational displays about the area’s ecology and history. From here, visitors can often see Scottish Highland cattle and Konik horses grazing in the open meadows.
For those interested in night-time experiences, sky platforms at Vlinderbalg, Achter de Zwarten, and Zoutkamperplaat provide excellent spots for stargazing, taking advantage of Lauwersmeer’s minimal light pollution. The towers and platforms are freely accessible and open year-round, though specific opening hours and accessibility details may vary by location. Whether you’re a keen birder, a nature photographer, or simply seeking a peaceful vantage point, the observation towers of Lauwersmeer offer a memorable perspective on this dynamic natural landscape.
