Kasteel Weldam
Historic estate with 17th-century architecture and gardens
Kasteel Weldam, set in the scenic landscape of Hof van Twente, is one of the largest and most historically significant estates in the eastern Netherlands. The castle’s origins date back to at least 1380, with its earliest documented history beginning in 1389. Over the centuries, Weldam has passed through several prominent families, most notably the Sticke and Ripperda families, whose stewardship in the 16th and 17th centuries saw the estate expand with new wings, outbuildings, and the addition of a moat. The grounds are believed to have featured a Renaissance garden from this period, reflecting the tastes of the Dutch nobility.
Today, Kasteel Weldam is known for its stately architecture and formal gardens, which are surrounded by avenues, woodlands, and estate houses. The estate’s connection to the nearby Twickel Estate, established through inheritance in 1751, has helped preserve its character and continuity. While the castle itself remains a private residence and is not generally open to the public, the gardens and surrounding parklands are accessible for visitors at certain times, offering a peaceful setting for walks and a glimpse into the region’s aristocratic past.
Exploring the Weldam estate allows visitors to appreciate both the architectural heritage and the carefully maintained landscape that have defined this part of Twente for centuries. The estate’s history and natural beauty make it a rewarding stop for those interested in Dutch castles and country life.
