Twickel castle

Twickel stands just outside Delden, a small town in the Twente region of Overijssel, and Twickel Castle is the centrepiece of one of the largest privately owned estates in the Netherlands’ countryside. The castle is a moated house whose roots go back to the Middle Ages, with the first written mention of Twickel dating to the fourteenth century. What visitors see today is the product of many rebuildings, as the house grew from a fortified residence into a comfortable country seat for a noble family over several centuries.

The water around the building is the first thing that catches the eye. Broad moats wrap the main house and its forecourt, and old trees close in on every side, so the castle appears quite suddenly at the end of a lane. Inside, the rooms are furnished with family portraits, tapestries and the accumulated furniture of generations, which is why the guided tours are popular with people who like to see how a Dutch noble household actually lived rather than a staged museum. Tours run only on selected days, so it is worth checking the current schedule before making the trip.

Visitors can use the grounds more freely than the house. Formal gardens lie close to the house, with clipped hedges, flower borders and a restored orangery, while further out the estate opens into avenues, meadows, farmland and woods. Walking routes of different lengths cross the parkland and link up with farms and estate buildings that still belong to the property. Because the estate is managed as a working landscape, the walk combines garden scenery with a feel for how this part of eastern Holland has been farmed and forested for centuries.

A tea room and shop near the gardens make a natural pause, and the kitchen garden adds a practical, productive side to the formal planting. Some parts of the grounds can be closed for maintenance or private use, so it is sensible to follow the signs on the day.

Twickel pairs well with Kasteel Weldam, another house in the same part of Hof van Twente, and the two together give a good picture of the noble estates that once dotted Twente. The place suits slow walkers, garden lovers, history enthusiasts and photographers who want water, brick and old trees in one frame. A visit also combines easily with a stroll through Delden itself, where the Zoutmuseum tells the story of the salt that shaped the region. Allow at least half a day if you plan to take a tour and still walk the park.
