Country estates

The Hof van Twente, a rural municipality in the east of the Netherlands, is known for its country estates, the large manor houses with gardens, woodland and farmland that were built by noble and wealthy families over several centuries. The area around Delden, Diepenheim, Goor and Markelo has a high concentration of them, and together they give the landscape its parkland character, with winding lanes, old oaks, ponds and streams. Many estates still belong to families or foundations, and some open their gardens to visitors in the warmer months.

Twickel, near Delden, is the largest. It is a vast private estate of several thousand hectares, with a castle, formal gardens, woods, heathland and farms, and it has been in the same family line for centuries, now managed by a foundation. The grounds are partly open for walking and cycling, with gardens that are open for part of the year, and the estate is a major element of the landscape. In Delden you will also find the Zoutmuseum, the salt museum, which tells the story of salt mining in the Twente region, and Old Blasius, a historic building in the town.

Singraven, near Denekamp, is another estate often recommended, with a manor house, a historic coach house and a working watermill on the Dinkel river that has been grinding grain for centuries. Its park is pleasant for an easy stroll. Huize Warmelo, in Diepenheim, is known for its gardens, including a formal French garden, a pond in the rococo style, a rose garden and an area for birds. Kasteel Weldam, near Goor, and the estate called Borkeld are further examples, and each has a different atmosphere.

Planning matters when visiting estates. Gardens are usually open only in certain months and on certain days, and admission fees vary, while interiors may be private or open only on special days. A good approach is to choose two or three and link them on a cycling day, since the paths are well signposted and the landscape is gentle. Some estates offer refreshments in tea rooms or farm cafes, which makes a convenient stop.

The estates suit garden lovers, cyclists, walkers, history fans and families who enjoy a day in the countryside. Spring and early summer bring blossom and fresh greens, and autumn colours are impressive in the old woods. Check each estate's website for current hours, as these change from year to year.
