Historic estates with gardens and vast woodlands

9.1/10
#1 of 2 in Twente

The Twente region in the eastern Netherlands is renowned for its picturesque country estates, where centuries-old manor houses are set amid rolling woodlands, formal gardens, and tranquil waterways. Exploring these estates offers visitors a glimpse into the rural aristocratic life that shaped the area’s landscape and culture.

Among the highlights is Twickel Castle, a vast 4,000-hectare estate spanning several municipalities. Its grounds feature Europe’s largest continuous oak forest, heathlands, peat bogs, and beautifully maintained gardens that are especially inviting between mid-May and mid-October. Singraven Country Estate near Denekamp is another must-see, with its stately manor house, historic coach house, and a working watermill that dates back centuries. The estate’s parkland is perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Huize Warmelo in Diepenheim stands out for its formal French garden, rococo pond, rose garden, and bird sanctuary, all set within a 7-hectare park. For a more relaxed experience, Het Everloo near Oldenzaal combines the charm of a former manor farm with a cozy farm-restaurant serving Dutch pancakes and local treats.

Many estates open their gardens to visitors during the warmer months, though opening times and admission fees vary. While some, like Landhuishotel Bloemenbeek, offer garden access primarily to hotel guests, others welcome day visitors to explore their grounds and enjoy the peaceful, historic atmosphere that defines Twente’s countryside.
