Scheveningen

Scheveningen lies on the North Sea coast, just northwest of The Hague, of which it is a district, and it is the Netherlands’ best-known seaside resort. It combines a rich maritime past with an energetic present. Scheveningen began as a small fishing village, and its history goes back to at least the 13th century. For centuries its economy was built on fishing and shipping, and local families faced the North Sea’s unpredictable waters. In the 19th century Scheveningen became a fashionable resort, drawing visitors from across Europe to its wide beaches and fresh sea air. The Kurhaus hotel, opened in 1885, and the first pier, built in 1901, fixed its reputation as a place of leisure and elegance. The Memorial Needle on the beach marks the landing of the future King William I in 1813, when the Dutch monarchy was established.

Today Scheveningen is a lively district with something for every visitor. The main attraction is Scheveningen Beach, a broad stretch of golden sand good for sunbathing, swimming and beach sports. The busy boulevard is lined with beach pavilions, cafes and restaurants serving fresh fish and international food. The Scheveningen Pier, rebuilt in the 1960s, is a focal point for visitors, with a Ferris wheel, bungee jumping, a zip line, shops and views of the coastline. SkyView De Pier, the observation wheel at the end, gives a wide view. The historic Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus, with its ornate façade and elegant interiors, remains a symbol of the area’s glamorous past and hosts concerts, events and afternoon teas.

Culture and art are part of Scheveningen’s appeal. Museum Beelden aan Zee, in the dunes, shows contemporary sculpture in a striking modern building, and Panorama Mesdag, nearby, presents a 360-degree painting of 19th-century Scheveningen and its surroundings. The area’s fishing heritage lives on at the harbour, where visitors can watch the fishing boats come and go, try traditional Dutch herring or eat at one of the many fish restaurants. The harbour is also a centre for water sports, among them surfing, sailing and stand-up paddleboarding, with lessons and equipment rentals for all levels. Beach clubs such as Aloha and Hart Beach are popular with surfers.

Nature lovers can explore the dunes and parks nearby, such as the Oostduinpark and the Westduinpark, which have walking and cycling trails through coastal landscapes with their own plants and animals. The boulevard is good for a leisurely walk, and the sunsets over the North Sea are a daily event. Families have plenty to do, from the SEA LIFE Scheveningen aquarium to the Legoland Discovery Centre and the AFAS Circustheater, which stages musicals and shows through the year. Keizerstraat, in the old village, gives a glimpse of the neighbourhood’s earlier life.

Scheveningen is easy to reach from the centre of The Hague by tram, bus or bicycle, which makes it a convenient day trip or longer stay. There is parking near the beach, though public transport is wise in the busy summer months. The events calendar includes beach festivals, a fireworks competition and the New Year’s Day plunge, a mass swim in the cold sea, so there is nearly always something going on.

The best time to visit Scheveningen is from late spring to early autumn, from May to September, when the weather is warmest and the beach is at its liveliest. Summer brings long days, busy terraces and a festive mood, while spring and early autumn offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Even in winter Scheveningen has its charm, with bracing walks along the shore, cosy cafes and dramatic seascapes.
