Kurhaus

The Kurhaus is the grand building that dominates the seafront of Scheveningen, the beach district of The Hague. It was built in the 1880s as part of the effort to turn the old fishing village into a fashionable seaside resort, at a time when sea bathing and holidays on the coast were becoming popular among the wealthy of Europe. German architects were responsible for the design, and the large central hall, the wings with their towers and the sweeping facade give it the character of a palace by the sea.

The main hall is the great feature. Known as the Kurzaal, it is a large concert and ballroom with a glass and iron roof, rich decoration and tall windows, and it was designed for orchestral concerts, balls and gatherings of resort society. For decades it was one of the main venues of the Netherlands, and it still hosts concerts, galas, conferences and weddings. Visitors who look in the public areas can see the scale and the decoration, though events may close parts of the building to the public.

The Kurhaus has also served as a hotel throughout its history, and it remains one of the best-known luxury hotels on the Dutch coast. Its rooms look out over the North Sea, and the terrace in front of the building gives wide views along the beach and the boulevard, with the pier in the distance. It is a pleasant place for a coffee or a drink, particularly in the late afternoon. Guests also have access to spa facilities, and some services are open to day visitors, though reservations are advisable in summer and at weekends.

The setting adds to the experience. The beach is just across the promenade, and the boulevard has a long line of restaurants and pavilions. The harbour, the pier with its viewing wheel and tower, and the sea life attractions are within walking distance, and the tram connects the area with The Hague centre. In winter, the building stands out against grey skies and rough sea, and in summer it is a backdrop for beach life.

The Kurhaus suits architecture lovers, anyone interested in the history of seaside resorts and visitors who like a touch of old-fashioned grandeur. A look at the interior and the terrace takes half an hour, longer with a coffee. Check access if you hope to see the hall, as it is often booked.
