Lisse

Lisse lies in the province of South Holland, in the middle of the Bollenstreek, the Dutch Flower Bulb Region, and is closely tied to the tulip fields and the Keukenhof Gardens that bring visitors from all over the world. The town has a long tradition of growing flowers and bulbs. Since about the 16th century the sandy soils of the area have been ideal for bulbs, and over time the town became a centre of the Dutch flower industry, with generations of growers perfecting the production of tulips, hyacinths and daffodils. The region became the centre of the Netherlands’ bulb growing after the great tulip boom of the 17th century, and it has stayed that way ever since.

The best-known attraction in Lisse is Keukenhof, often called the Garden of Europe. Open each year from mid-March to mid-May, Keukenhof shows around seven million bulbs in bloom across about 32 hectares of landscaped gardens, pavilions and water features. Visitors can walk through themed gardens, see artistic flower arrangements and take part in events such as flower shows and photography exhibitions. For photographers the gardens offer endless chances to capture colours and patterns, and Keukenhof’s peak weeks in April are very busy, so it is wise to book tickets in advance and arrive early.

Beyond Keukenhof, Lisse offers a good deal more. The Flower Bulb Region itself is a highlight, with cycling and walking routes that wind between endless fields of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. The best way to see the landscape is by renting a bike and following the marked paths that link Lisse with neighbouring towns such as Hillegom, Noordwijkerhout and Sassenheim. Along the way there are flower farms, roadside stalls and traditional windmills where visitors can get a taste of rural Dutch life. Hyacinth fields around Lisse bloom a little earlier than the tulips.

For history and culture, the Museum De Zwarte Tulp, the Black Tulip Museum, shows how the bulb industry developed, how new varieties are bred and what tulips have meant in Dutch culture. Keukenhof Castle, a stately estate with woodland and gardens, gives a glimpse of the area’s aristocratic past, and hosts art exhibitions, concerts and seasonal events.

Lisse’s compact centre has cafes, restaurants and shops where visitors can try local specialities and buy flower-themed souvenirs. The town is also known for its markets and festivals, especially in spring, when flower parades and community events fill the streets with colour and music.

Getting to Lisse is convenient, with regular train and bus connections from Amsterdam, Leiden and Haarlem. During the Keukenhof season, special shuttle buses run directly from major cities and from Schiphol Airport. There is ample parking for those who come by car, and the flat terrain makes it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle.

The best time to visit Lisse is in spring, especially from mid-April to early May, when the tulip fields and Keukenhof Gardens are at their peak. The region’s scenery and cultural sights make it an appealing destination through the year, however, with summer and autumn offering quieter landscapes and chances for cycling and outdoor activities, and the bulb fields are bare but the countryside is calm.
