Tulip Fields (around Lisse)

The tulip fields around Lisse are among the most photographed landscapes in the Netherlands, and they come alive each spring in the Bollenstreek, the bulb-growing region on the coast of South Holland between Haarlem and Leiden. From mid-March until mid-May the flat fields are striped with colour, in blocks of red, yellow, pink, purple and white, and the best display usually comes in mid-April. The fields lie around Keukenhof, the famous flower garden, and the combination attracts visitors from around the world.

The fields exist to produce bulbs, not cut flowers. Growers plant the bulbs in autumn, and the plants bloom in spring, but the flower heads are usually cut off soon after they open so that the plant puts its energy into growing a strong bulb underground. The bulbs are then harvested in summer and sold across the world. This explains why the colour fades in a matter of weeks, and why the fields are rotated over several years to protect the soil. The sight is therefore a brief and slightly ephemeral one.

The flowering sequence also gives structure to a spring visit. Crocuses and daffodils appear first, followed by hyacinths, which perfume the air, and then the tulips take over. In April the Bloemencorso, a parade of floats decorated with flowers, travels through the region, and it is a spectacle that attracts large crowds. Early in the season, the weather can be cold and wet, so the timing of the bloom varies from year to year.

The best way to see the fields is by bicycle, following marked routes along quiet lanes between the plots. Rental shops in Lisse and nearby towns supply bikes. Boat trips and bus tours are also available, and some growers open small gardens. A few rules matter: the fields are private working land, so do not walk into them to take photos, and never pick the flowers. Stay on the paths, and be careful on narrow roads where cars and cyclists share space.

The tulip fields suit couples, photographers and families. Aim for early morning or evening for soft light and fewer people, and check bloom reports before travelling. The Black Tulip Museum and Keukenhof are close, and the nearby hyacinth fields add scent to the experience.
