Black Tulip Museum

The Black Tulip Museum (Museum De Zwarte Tulp) in Lisse offers a fascinating look into the world of Dutch flower-bulb culture. Located in the heart of the Bollenstreek, just a short walk from the famous Keukenhof gardens, the museum is housed in a former bulb shed and features early 20th-century board rooms from the Van Herwaarden BV brick factory. This setting provides a fitting backdrop for exploring the region’s 500-year history of tulip cultivation and its impact on Dutch society.

Inside, interactive exhibits guide visitors through the evolution of flower-bulb farming, from traditional field labor to modern breeding techniques. The museum’s collection includes paintings, glassware, silver, and china inspired by tulips, as well as rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. Families and school groups will find plenty to engage with, thanks to hands-on displays and educational activities.

The Black Tulip Museum also features a seasonal garden where visitors can see blooming bulbs up close, a museum shop with flower-themed gifts, and a café for a relaxing break. Opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday from 1 pm to 5 pm, and Friday to Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm; the museum is closed on Mondays. Admission is €10.00 for adults, €5.00 for children aged 5–18, and free for children under 4. Tickets are available online.
