Tilburg University is a Dutch university with a focus on the social sciences, law, economics and business, and its campus lies in a green area in the north of the city. Unlike the medieval centre of many Dutch university towns, the campus is a modern site, and it offers a glimpse of contemporary academic life, with students cycling between lecture halls, cafes and sports fields. The campus is described as green and smoke-free, and it is pleasant to walk through on a sunny day.
The university has an interesting history. It was founded in 1927 as the Roman Catholic Commercial College, an institution aimed at giving Catholics in the south of the Netherlands access to higher education in economics and business at a time when they were underrepresented in the professions. It grew steadily, adding faculties in law, social sciences and humanities, and became a full university in the 1960s, adopting its present name. Today it has a strong international reputation, particularly in economics and business studies, and students come from around the world.
The campus architecture reflects its development, with a mix of buildings from different decades. Post-war modernist blocks stand beside newer structures, and the open green spaces, ponds and tree-lined paths give the area a park-like quality. The nearby Warande, a wooded park, offers extra space for walks. Cafes, a library and sports facilities serve the student community, and the atmosphere is relaxed and informal.
Visitors are not charged to walk through the public parts of the campus, though buildings may be accessible only during opening hours or for events. It is a good place for people with an interest in education, and parents considering a university for their children often visit on open days. The university organises public lectures, exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year, and the programme is posted on its website.
Tilburg offers other attractions that fit into a day. The TextielMuseum, in a former wool factory, shows the city's industrial past and its modern design, and the Sint-Brigidakerk is a landmark church. The city has parks such as the Wilhelminapark and the Stadspark, and a lively centre with cafes and shops. De Lakenhal, which appears in listings of nearby sights, is in Leiden and not in Tilburg.
The campus suits students, academics and those interested in architecture and landscaping. Bring a bicycle, which is the best way to get around, and check the programme for events.
