Tilburg Market Square (Markt)

Tilburg is the largest city in North Brabant after Eindhoven, and it grew in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries on the strength of the textile industry, which gave it the nickname of the wool city. Its public squares reflect that more modern character, with less of the medieval charm of other Dutch towns. The central square called the Heuvel is the main meeting point, and market stalls and weekly markets take place at several locations, with the Saturday market known as the largest and most lively.

The market tradition is important to the city. Open-air markets in the Netherlands sell fresh produce, cheese, fish, flowers, clothing and household goods, and they are social occasions as well as places to shop. In Tilburg, the markets draw people from across the region, and the food stalls often reflect the cultural mix of a city that is home to many nationalities. The square called the Heuvel has a particular claim to fame. It is the site of the Paleis-Raadhuis, the Palace Town Hall, a building that was begun as a palace for King William II, who had a special affection for Tilburg and was a regular visitor, but who died before it was finished. The unfinished palace was converted into a town hall, and the building is now a monument to that royal connection. Around the Heuvel, there are cafes and terraces, and the square is the focus of events and celebrations.

Tilburg is also known for its carnival, one of the biggest in the south of the country, in which the city temporarily changes its name to Kruikenstad. The festival turns the streets into a party for several days, with parades, costumes and music. The city also has a strong cultural scene, with the TextielMuseum, a leading museum of textile art and design in a former factory, the Sint-Brigidakerk and parks such as the Wilhelminapark and the Stadspark.
