Tilburg Textile Museum (TextielMuseum)

Tilburg is a city in the south of the Netherlands that grew rich on wool. In the nineteenth century dozens of factories spun and wove woollen cloth here, and the city was known as the wool capital of the country. Thousands of workers moved in from the countryside, and whole districts of housing, churches and schools were built for them. The industry declined in the second half of the twentieth century, when production moved abroad, and many of the mills were closed, but the city has kept the memory of that era alive. The TextielMuseum is its principal monument, housed in a former wool factory, and it is among the most original museums in the country.

The building is part of the story. A large brick factory complex, with high halls, iron columns and big windows, has been adapted for the museum, with modern extensions added. Because the old rooms have kept their size and atmosphere, the exhibition halls feel airy and spacious, and visitors can still sense the scale of the industrial work that went on here. A tall chimney recalls the age of steam, and part of the original machinery can be seen, including a steam engine that powered the mill.

What makes the museum different is that it is a working place as well as a display. Alongside the exhibitions of historic and contemporary textiles, there is a workshop called the TextielLab, where artists and designers from many countries come to develop projects using industrial looms, knitting machines and digital printers and embroidery equipment, working with skilled technicians. Visitors can watch looms in action, see how fabrics are woven and learn how an idea becomes a finished textile. The collection ranges from traditional woollen cloth and old pattern books to experimental works by modern artists and fashion designers, and temporary exhibitions often explore the links between textiles, fashion, art and technology.

The museum has hands-on elements for children and workshops for adults, a cafe and a shop selling textiles and design objects. The museum is a short walk from the centre of Tilburg, with its markets, cafes and shops, and the city park and the Paleis-Raadhuis are also close.
