Natuurpark Lelystad
Wildlife conservation and native species in natural habitats
Natuurpark Lelystad is a spacious nature reserve on the outskirts of Lelystad, offering a unique opportunity to observe wildlife in a natural setting. Established in the early 1970s in partnership with Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo, the park was originally created to protect large hoofed mammals and now plays a key role in conservation and reintroduction programs. Notably, Natuurpark Lelystad has contributed to the successful return of Przewalski’s horses to Mongolia and European bison to reserves across Europe.
The park features a network of walking and cycling paths that wind through deciduous woods, open meadows, and around large ponds. Visitors can spot a variety of animals, including European bison, Przewalski’s horses, Père David’s deer, elk, red deer, and wild boar, all living in spacious enclosures designed to mimic their natural habitats. Wild species such as roe deer, otters, beavers, foxes, and a wide range of birds—including storks, spoonbills, kingfishers, and white-tailed eagles—also make their home here.
A visitor centre provides maps and information, and guests are encouraged to bring binoculars for the best wildlife viewing experience. The park is ideal for family outings, nature walks, and photography. Parking is available for €3, and there is no separate entrance fee for the park itself. Natuurpark Lelystad offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can connect with nature and learn about important conservation efforts in the Netherlands.
