Luchtvaartmuseum Aviodrome

Aviodrome is the Dutch national aviation museum, and it stands on the grounds of Lelystad Airport in Flevoland. The museum moved here from its earlier home at Schiphol in the early 2000s, and the open spaces of the polder, reclaimed from the old Zuiderzee, give its large halls and outdoor airfield room to breathe. The museum tells the history of Dutch aviation, from early pioneers to the age of the jet, with real aircraft as its main exhibits.

The indoor halls hold a large collection, including historic Dutch aircraft, military types, helicopters and airliners. One of the most striking exhibits is a Boeing 747, one of the iconic jumbo jets, which visitors can enter and walk through, and which gives a sense of how big the aircraft was compared with earlier planes. Other highlights include propeller airliners from the golden age of KLM and aircraft that tell the story of the Dutch air force and of aircraft manufacturing in the Netherlands, including Fokker.

Outdoors, the museum has an airfield with larger aircraft displayed in the open. A reconstruction of the 1928 Schiphol terminal recalls the early days of civil aviation, when flying was a rare adventure for a few wealthy passengers. Exhibits include simulators and hands-on activities, and children can sit in cockpits and try some of the controls. Displays explain how an aircraft flies, how airports work and how aviation changed travel and war in the twentieth century.

The museum is large, so plan on several hours, and a full day is possible for enthusiasts. Cafes on site make it practical to stay through lunch. Opening days and ticket prices vary through the year, so consult the official website before travelling.

Lelystad has other attractions worth combining. Batavialand and the Bataviawerf, where a replica of the seventeenth-century East India ship Batavia was built, tell a very different maritime story. Nature reserves and land art installations lie around the town, and in spring the tulip fields of the Flevoland polder are in colour.

Aviodrome suits families, aviation fans and school groups. Lelystad is reachable by train from Amsterdam in about forty minutes, followed by a bus or a short taxi ride to the museum, and there is a car park on site for those driving.
