Museum Abdijkerk Thorn

The Museum Abdijkerk is a museum inside the abbey church of Thorn, a small town in Limburg often called the White Town. The church, dedicated to Saint Michael, was the centre of a community of noblewomen, the canonesses of Thorn Abbey, and it holds both the building and a collection of religious art and treasures. A visit combines architecture with a look at the history of a unique institution, and it is one of the key places to understand why Thorn developed as it did.

The church has a long history. A first church stood on the site from the time the abbey was founded around the end of the tenth century, and the present building developed over the following centuries, with a Gothic structure from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and later alterations, including Baroque furnishings added in the eighteenth century. The mixture of styles is typical of a building that remained in use for so long. The exterior of the church is plain and the tower is a landmark in the town, rising above the white houses.

Inside, the visitor finds the choir where the canonesses worshipped, richly decorated altars and a crypt that holds relics and tombs. The abbey church also served as a burial place for abbesses and other members of the community, and memorials commemorate them. The Baroque high altar and the paintings and statues show the artistic taste of the noble women who patronised the church. The museum displays liturgical objects, vestments, silver and sculptures from the treasury, which give an idea of the wealth and devotion of the abbey.

The tradition of female leadership is part of the story. The abbess of Thorn ruled the territory in a way that was unusual in Europe, and the museum presents this history through documents, portraits and objects. The abbey's influence ended with the French invasion at the end of the eighteenth century, after which the community was dissolved, but the church survived as a parish church.

The church stands at the highest point of the town, and the surrounding lanes are lined with white houses.
