Thorn – The White Town

Thorn is a small town in the Dutch province of Limburg, close to the Belgian border and the Maas river, and it has an unusual look: most of its old houses are painted white. That has earned it the nickname the White Town, and it is the main reason people come. The whitewashed walls, red roofs and cobbled lanes give the town a calm, uniform appearance that feels unlike the brick of most Dutch towns, and it is easy to see why photographers like it.

The white paint is usually dated to the period after the French arrived in the 1790s, and the explanation most often given links it to taxes on windows or bricks, which led residents to cover their walls with plaster and lime. The tradition stuck, and over time the town developed a reputation for its appearance. Whatever the exact origin, the effect is the result of a long habit of keeping the walls white, and today it is part of the character that residents protect.

The deeper story is the abbey. Thorn grew around a community of noblewomen founded in 975, and its abbesses ruled the small territory as princesses, answering to the Holy Roman Emperor and not to any Dutch authority. That made Thorn a tiny independent state for centuries, and it is why the town has a large abbey church, the St Michaelskerk, rising above the roofs. The Gemeentemuseum Het Land van Thorn and the Museum Abdijkerk Thorn tell different parts of this story, and a visit to one or both adds depth to a walk through the streets.

The pleasure of Thorn is in slow wandering. The core of the town is small and can be crossed in minutes, but it rewards a leisurely pace: narrow lanes, small squares, hidden courtyards and gardens, and a handful of cafes and restaurants where you can sit outside in good weather. The white-painted buildings of Thorn are best seen in clear light, and early morning or late afternoon are quieter and more atmospheric than the middle of the day.

The surrounding area is good for walking and cycling, with the lakes and river landscape of the Maasplassen close by, and Belgium is only a short ride away. Thorn is a small place and a visit can take just a couple of hours, though many people stay for lunch and make an afternoon of it. It suits couples, photographers, history lovers and anyone who wants a peaceful break in southern Limburg.
