Gemeentemuseum 'Het Land Van Thorn'

The Gemeentemuseum Het Land van Thorn is the local museum of Thorn, a small town in the Dutch province of Limburg that is known as the White Town because of its whitewashed houses. The name of the museum refers to the land of Thorn, the territory that was once ruled by the abbey of Thorn, an unusual noble religious community whose influence shaped the entire area. The museum presents the history of this territory and the town that grew up around the abbey.

Thorn Abbey was founded around the end of the tenth century and housed canonesses, women of noble birth who lived a religious life but were not bound by the strict vows of nuns. They could keep their property, have servants and, in some cases, leave the community to marry. The abbess was the ruler of a small independent state, the Land of Thorn, which had its own courts and administration and was subject only to the Holy Roman Emperor. This situation lasted until the French invasion at the end of the eighteenth century, when the abbey was dissolved and the territory absorbed.

The museum shows objects and documents that tell this story, including finds from the town and surrounding area, items connected with the abbey and the daily life of its inhabitants, and displays on how the settlement developed from early times. The collection gives context to a visit to the abbey church, the Sint-Michaelskerk, which is the dominant building in the town and has a mixture of Gothic and Baroque features and a treasury of its own. The white houses are the town's best-known feature. According to local tradition, many were painted white after the French occupation, when the owners of brick houses were taxed on the basis of the number of windows or the use of brick, and whitewash was a way of disguising or improving the old walls. Whatever the origin, the effect is striking, and a walk through the narrow, cobbled streets with their white facades and red roofs is one of the pleasures of South Limburg.
