Hortus Haren is the botanical garden of the University of Groningen, and it lies in the town of Haren, just south of the city of Groningen, in a large, mature park. It is a living collection of plants maintained for research, teaching and public enjoyment, and it is one of the best known gardens in the north of the Netherlands. The garden has a long academic tradition behind it, since the university's interest in plants goes back centuries, and the collections are managed by specialists with the help of a large group of volunteers, more than a hundred of them, whose work keeps the garden going.
What makes it appealing is the way it is laid out. The garden has been described as a living mosaic, with paths that branch like thoughts and lead the visitor from one themed area to another, and the plan rewards wandering without a fixed route. Different sections show plants from many parts of the world, as well as native Dutch species, and gardens in various styles, so a single visit can take you from a shady woodland to a sunny border or a rock garden in a few minutes. Rare and exotic specimens are mixed with familiar plants, and labels give names and origins.
Botanical gardens are places where science and beauty meet. The plants are grown to study how they live, to conserve rare species and to teach students, and many of them have an interesting story, such as how they were discovered or what they were used for. For visitors, the experience is mostly one of peace and colour, with seasonal changes from the first bulbs of spring through summer flowers to autumn colour. The garden is a good place for photography, for a quiet walk or for a picnic if rules allow, and families with children will enjoy hunting for unusual plants.
Practical details should be checked on the garden's website. Opening hours are normally from morning to late afternoon, and tickets are sold at the entrance, with discounts for certain groups. Special events, such as plant markets and guided tours, take place during the year. The garden is a short ride by bicycle or train from Groningen, and Haren itself has cafes and a pleasant village centre.
The garden suits plant lovers, families, photographers and anyone looking for a calm afternoon. Allow one to two hours, and visit in late spring or early summer for the greatest variety in flower.
