Forum

Forum Groningen is a large cultural building at the Nieuwe Markt, close to the Grote Markt and the old centre of Groningen, opened in 2019. It was designed by the Dutch studio NL Architects and is meant to be the city's meeting place, combining a library, a cinema and exhibition spaces with cafes and public areas under one roof. Its angular, glassy shape and its large overhanging volume make it unmistakable among the older buildings around it, and it has become a landmark of the city.

The building is arranged as a stack of open floors rather than separate rooms, and the aim is that people wander through and discover things. The public library occupies several levels, with books, reading areas and study spaces, and the Forum also includes a house for film and image, with cinemas and exhibitions that often explore photography, digital culture and design. Visitors do not need a ticket to walk in, and many people use the building as a place to meet, study or simply spend time. Events, talks, workshops and debates take place through the year, which gives it a lively programme.

The feature most visitors remember is the roof. A large terrace on top gives views across the old centre of Groningen, with the Martinitoren, the tall church tower that dominates the skyline, rising among the roofs, and the surrounding flat countryside beyond. The terrace is a popular place to take photographs, to sit with a coffee and to watch the weather change over the city. Stairs and escalators lead up through the building, so the ascent is part of the experience.

Groningen is a university city, and a good number of its inhabitants are young, which gives the Forum a busy and informal atmosphere. The building is used by students, families, older residents and tourists alike. Cafes and a restaurant offer places to eat, and the building is generally open for long hours, with some areas open late.
